Behind the Scenes in Boston — How UK Talent Impressed American Coaches
In July 2025, This Athlete took 15 promising young footballers on a seven-day exposure tour to Boston, USA — a trip designed to give players a chance to experience US college soccer. From high-level ID camps to fixtures against academy sides, campus tours, and even an MLS game, the experience gave players a chance to showcase their talent and see if the American college pathway is right for them.
The Itinerary
Over the course of the week, players:
- Attended University of New Hampshire (UNH) and Dartmouth College ID camps, competing directly in front of college coaches (Both NCAA D1 and IVY league)
- Played two showcase fixtures against local U19 academy sides, offering live recruitment opportunities
- Took guided campus tours at Holy Cross, Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), and Franklin Pierce University
- Watched an MLS match between New England Revolution and Orlando City, soaking up the atmosphere of US professional soccer
The schedule was full-on but that’s exactly what makes these trips so impactful.
Experience, Exposure, and Clarity
The trip wasn’t just about being seen by coaches; it was about giving players a real taste of what life as a student-athlete in the US looks like.
They stayed near campuses, got a feel for American sports culture, and learned first-hand how facilities, academics, and daily life differs from the UK sports Universities.
“It helped me realise what I’d be signing up for. After doing the trip, I feel more confident about going out to the US for uni,” said Leon K. Aged 17
Several players received direct interest from coaches on the tour.
What Players Learned
Players came away with much more than just exposure:
- How American coaches evaluate talent differently
- What it means to market yourself in a competitive scholarship system
- The value of personality, academics, and adaptability in the recruitment process
- US soccer isn’t a backup option – it’s a serious, professional stepping stone
- Got an understanding of the different levels in the USA (NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA)
What Happens Next?
Several players are now in follow-up conversations with coaches from schools we visited. Others have gained valuable clarity about whether life as a student athlete in Boston is right for them.
